Costs & Contracts
Service Types The cost for this type of service and the length of contract time depends upon many different factors. Here are the top three areas which I focus on. First is the number and type of geese that are to be worked. Canada goose numbers can be anywhere from a few dozen to a few hundred birds. These are usually workable numbers for one or two Border Collies. When doing K-9 harassment, I use dogs that I own and train. I don't subcontract out my work and I only use Working Border Collies. I know of some folks who keep their dogs on a four foot leash, walk them up to a few Canada geese, and then tell folks that they are doing goose control work. WHAT A JOKE! All they are doing is walking "Fluffy" in the park or on a community property and then clipping the client for big bucks. Goose control used for Snow geese can take a much different spin. Snow goose control is based on volume...they come at you in the thousands...this requires a totally different game plan. Snow geese also do a technique called "rolling." They will lift from one place in the field and set down a few hundred yards away. It is a little game of "keep away." The second area that is of concern is the size of the property. How many acres will need to be worked, what type of barriers like roads and fences are there, and how many ponds or lakes are on the property? All important issues. The third area involves the treatment types and the number of visits needed to make a measurable change. Reducing or removing two or three Canada geese is not doing the job. I look for LARGE reductions. Since we do not use a one dimensional approach, several different techniques and material types must be considered. Ponds can be strung, fences erected, property posted, landscaping adjusted, K-9 patrols done at random times, the use of sound or motion detectors, decoys, and the list of control materials and techniques is endless. We don't use chemical sprays which are applied to the lawn. They are costly and largely ineffective.
Costs & Contracts FIRST STATE BORDER PATROL offers several contract options. Contracts can be short term, long term, on call, or as need. It's just that easy. I don't believe in doing long term work for short term solutions. This is nothing more that stealing money from the client. Do the job, do it well, and capture the reference for life! The cost depends upon the type of service plan that is selected and the types of materials and techniques used to make a measurable difference. Again, I said "measurable" and this does not mean one or two birds...

At FIRST STATE BORDER PATROL we breed, train, sell, and use Working Border Collies. This is a 10 month old female which is from our breeding program. She is owned by a family in Salisbury, Maryland. I have another Border Collie which is doing goose control work on a farm near the Maryland Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

I am working with K-9 Jess on the "walk-up" and "lie down" commands. The same commands used to move sheep on the farm are used in the goose control business. Quality goose control starts with Working Border Collies. It then uses other time proven materials and techniques to keep geese moving!
